Luke 14:28-33
Following Jesus means choosing Him and Him alone.
There is no plan B or exit strategy.
Introduction:
Discipleship begins when making backup plans ends. Jesus demands our highest loyalty. To be true followers of Him we must surrender every area of our lives regardless of the cost.
Starting Out:
How many people do you “follow” on social media? How much thought do you put into who you “follow”, and why did you choose to “follow” them?
Following up:
Did you share the beauty of God’s creation with anyone in your oikos this week?
Luke 14:28-33
1. What are some “costs” of following Jesus? Are they worth it?
2. Does God really expect us to “hate” our families?
3. What do you think the crowds that Jesus was speaking to thought of this?
4. What does it mean to “bear his own cross”?
5. What point is Jesus trying to make with the “tower builder” and “king”?
6. Does Jesus really require us to give up EVERYTHING? (v. 33)
Taking It Home:
7. Considering all that we must give up to follow Jesus, how would you make the case that it is worth it to an unbeliever?
8. What is one area of your life where you are following Jesus “half-heartedly”?
9. What actions can you take to ensure your relationship with Jesus takes precedence over all other relationships?
Emphasis on Oikos:
10. When was the last time you personally encountered a hostile attitude simply because someone knew you were a Jesus follower? Oftentimes people are hostile simply because they don’t understand. How can you lovingly help your oikos understand God’s love for them?
