Colossians 3:5-11

The world constantly tries to pull our attention in many
directions, but God calls us to focus on what is eternal.

Introduction:
As we continue through chapter 3, Paul encourages us to “take off the old self” and
“put on the new self”. Our new life in Christ should result in moving away from
harmful actions and attitudes and embracing a life that is centered on Christ.
Starting Out:
What clothing items have you “put off” over the years that you hope never make a
comeback?
Colossians 3:5-11:
1. What does it look like to put our old selves and its habits to death? (v. 5-8)
2. Why is the desire for pleasure so prevalent in our culture and in our lives?
3. Paul lists sins in verses 5, 8, & 9. What stands out to you about how these sins are
grouped together? Are some of these worse than others?
4. Why does God have so much wrath (extreme anger) toward sin? (v. 6)
5. What does Paul mean by saying our new selves are “being renewed in
knowledge”? (v. 10)
6. Why does Paul emphasize that “there is not Greek and Jew… in Christ”?
7. What does it mean that “Christ is all and in all”? (v. 11)
8. We learned last week that because of Christ’s redemptive work on the cross, our
lives are now “hidden with Christ in God”. How does knowing this give us
confidence in fighting sin?
Taking It Home:
9. How do we put sin to death? Hint: See Galatians 5:16
10. Have you truly put sin to death in your life?
Emphasis on Oikos:
11. How can you be a better reflector of Jesus to your Oikos this week, instead of just
being a recruiter?
