Colossians 3:1-4

When we focus on Jesus, we learn to set our hearts on what
He desires and our minds on what He values.

Introduction:
In Chapter 3 of Paul’s letter to the Colossians, Paul encourages us to “Put On the
New Self”. We are to “seek things that are above” and “set our minds on things that
are above”. In the previous chapter, Paul instructs that since we have a new life in
Christ, we have died to this world. In order to live this new life in Christ to its fullest,
we need to make sure we are focused on Him and not the things of this world.

Starting Out:
What are some examples of how we tend to focus on things of this world?

Colossians 3:1-4:
1. What does it mean to be “raised with Christ”? (v. 1)
2. In verse 1 we see that Christ is “seated at the right hand of God”. Why do you
think Paul mentions that He is there, and what do you think He is doing while
seated there? HINT: See Romans 8:34
3. How does Jesus intercede for us?
4. What does it mean to “set your mind on things that are above” and how is that
different from “seeking things that are above”?
5. How have we died? (v. 3)
6. What does it mean to be “hidden with Christ”?
7. When will Christ appear?
8. What does Paul mean we he says we will “appear with Him in glory”?

Taking It Home:
9. What steps can we take to keep our focus on Jesus?
10. What are some practical things we can put into place in our lives that would help
us identify what things are “from above” and what things are “on earth”?
11. What does living like a “citizen of heaven” here on earth look like?

Emphasis on Oikos:
12. How should having a “heavenly focus” instead of a “worldly focus” change the
way we view our neighbors, friends, and family?
