Lent is a 40 day period of prayer, fasting, and reflection leading up to Easter Sunday. It is meant to help us focus on Jesus’ suffering, death, and resurrection. The 40 days are based on Jesus’ time of fasting and temptation in the wilderness in Matthew 4:1-11. Traditionally, it begins on Ash Wednesday and ends on Easter Sunday.
Lent is not something that is commanded in Scripture. However, the Bible does teach us about fasting, repentance, and reflection on Christ’s sacrifice, all of which are central themes of Lent. It can be a very meaningful time of spiritual discipline if approached with the right heart. If you plan to join us in observing Lent this year, please remember:
- We fast, not to earn favor with God but to focus on Him.
- We pray, not to check off a box, but to draw near to God with a sincere heart.
- We read, reflect and meditate on Scripture, not to gain knowledge for its own sake, but to let God’s Word shape our hearts and minds.
To encourage you during this season of reflection, we have assembled a series of forty daily devotions for the 40 days of Lent.
