Mark 4:35-41
Suffering is an inevitable part of life. Tragedy mars this world: we will face the death of loved ones and friends, we will face the failing of our own health, or we might face the prospect of unemployment or marriage problems. Storms in life can tempt us to take our eyes off of Jesus; they can thwart our trust in Him. We can question if He still loves us if He allows us to experience difficulties. Or, storms can cause us to look to God with laser sharp focus. As the things in our world fall into chaos, our faith and hope in Jesus can be the only rock that will stabilize us in tumultuous times.
Read Mark 4:35-41:
- How did the disciples react to finding that Jesus was asleep in the midst of the storm?
- Why was Jesus sleeping? Why do you think He was able to continue to sleep during the violent storm?
- Have you ever been tempted to think that God didn’t care about you in the midst of your suffering?
- Contrast the disciples’ attitude toward the storm and Jesus’ attitude. What are the notable differences?
- Why was it so amazing to the disciples that the wind and waves obeyed Jesus?
- Why did Jesus seem to be disappointed with the disciples?
- What “storms” in your life have felt threatening to you?
